Rousing welcome for Terry at Yankee Stadium - Football
Published: 23 Jul 2012 - 03:46:49
Former England captain John Terry received a rousing reception at his first match since his acquittal on racism charges as European champions Chelsea played to a 1-1 draw with Paris Saint-Germain.
The friendly match between two of the world's richest clubs was played at new Yankee Stadium, the $1.5 billion ballpark that opened in 2009 as the new home of the storied Major League Baseball Club the New York Yankees.
Both clubs received goals from Brazilians, Chelsea forward Lucas Piazon converting a cross by another Brazilian, Ramires, for the equaliser in the 82nd minute.
Nene had scored a goal off a rebound in the box after 30 minutes to give the lead to a PSG side that dominated the first half.
Terry, captain of Premier League giants Chelsea, was given a standing ovation by overwhelmingly pro-Chelsea crowd of 38,000 when he entered the match in the 63rd minute.
Terry was found not guilty of racially abusing rival player Anton Ferdinand at the end of a five-day trial at Westminster Magistrates Court in London on July 13.
In another sub-plot, Carlo Ancelotti, who took over as manager of French club PSG in January, was facing the club that sacked him in May of 2011.
PSG delivered an energetic first half with a line up that included four pure attackers: Ezequiel Lavezzi, Nene, Kevin Gameiro and Javier Pastore.
In the third minute, a long pass from the right flank found Lavezzi wide open in the box. Chelsea keeper Petr Cech was forced to come off his line to thwart the Argentinian's effort.
Nene combined with Lavezzi for a high shot in the 19th and with his captain, right back Christophe Jallet, who mis-fired eight minutes later.
Nene's outstanding work was rewarded with his goal in the 30th minute. Pastore brought the ball down the left side, eluding three players before firing a shot that bounced off the post and to Nene, who fired into the back of the net from close range.
However, PSG lost their momentum after making eight substitutions to start the second half.
Wholesale second-half substitutions helped Chelsea, however, paying off with the 82nd minute goal from Piazon, who collected a cross from Ramires and slotted the ball inside the left post.
Chelsea continue their North American tour in Philadelphia on Wednesday when they take on the Major League Soccer All-Stars in the US league's annual All Star Game exhibition.

China's CNOOC to buy Canada's Nexen for $15.1 billion - Reuters
HONG KONG |
HONG KONG (Reuters) - China's top offshore oil producer CNOOC Ltd has agreed to buy Canada's Nexen Inc for about $15.1 billion in one of the most ambitious acquisitions by a Chinese company to date that may test Ottawa's tolerance of foreign takeovers.
State-controlled CNOOC said it would pay $27.50 per common share, representing a 61 percent premium to Nexen's closing price in New York on Friday.
"The aggregate value of the consideration of the proposed acquisition is approximately $15.1 billion (approximately HK$117.2 billion), and is to be payable in cash," CNOOC said in a statement filed on the Hong Kong stock exchange.
"The current indebtedness of Nexen of approximately $4.3 billion (approximately HK$33.6 billion) will remain outstanding. The company intends to fund the proposed acquisition through existing cash resources and external financing."
The statement said the deal would complement CNOOC's offshore production in China with Nexen assets in many of the world's most significant producing regions, including Western Canada, the UK's North Sea, the Gulf of Mexico and offshore Nigeria.
Nexen's assets include conventional oil and gas, oil sands and shale gas.
The statement said that the Nexen board has unanimously approved of the deal.
CNOOC made its first tentative Canadian investment in 2005, paying C$122 million ($120.76 million) for a 16.7 percent share of the then-private oil sand developer MEG Energy Corp.
It completed a C$2.1 billion acquisition of Opti Canada Ltd in November, giving the Chinese firm its second stake in a Canadian oil sands company.
The deals in Canada haven't yet awakened the political opposition seen in the United States in 2005 when CNOOC bid $18.5 billion for U.S. oil and gas producer Unocal Corp. The backlash killed that deal, upsetting Sino-U.S. relations.
But Canada can review and block any foreign investments worth more than C$330 million, a paltry sum in the global mergers game, if it thinks a deal is not in Canada's best interests.
It most noticeably exercised that right in 2010 when it blocked Anglo-Australian mining giant BHP Billiton's $39 billion hostile takeover of Potash Corp, the world's top fertilizer producer.
Yan Shi, UOB Kay Hian oil analyst based in Shanghai, said the price for the deal seemed reasonable.
"Assets in Canada are generally about more than 20 U.S. dollars per barrel. The cost in the deal is less than 20 dollars per barrel," Shi said.
"CNOOC has been seeking overseas acquisitions, as the domestic reserves are limited. But there has been many limits, things like foreign companies are reluctant to sell, price too high. This deal would be quite successful," she said.
Chinese companies have been among the most aggressive in targeting assets around the globe to help feed the fast growth of the world's second biggest economy.
BMO Capital Markets and Citigroup Global Markets Inc advised CNOOC while Nexen was advised by Goldman Sachs and RBC Capital Markets. ($1 = 1.0103 Canadian dollars)

Wiggins: Gold or nothing at London 2012 - ESPN.co.uk
Bradley Wiggins sealed one of the most outstanding achievements in British sporting history on Sunday, and then insisted "it's gold or nothing" at London 2012.
Wiggins clinched victory in the 2012 Tour de France, becoming the first Briton to do so in the 99th iteration of the famous race. Sir Chris Hoy, winner of four Olympic gold medals, labelled it the greatest ever sporting achievement by a Brit.
Champagne was present as Wiggins crossed the line in Paris, but celebrations will not last long as he now turns his focus to the Olympic Games. The 32-year-old is eyeing gold in the time trial, while he also has a major role to play in Mark Cavendish's attempt to win the Olympic road race.
Previously Wiggins had always played down the London Games, sticking to his belief that the Tour was priority. However, having tasted victory in France, he simply will not settle for anything less than first place in London.
"If I'm 100 per cent honest, it's gold or nothing in London now," a triumphant Wiggins said. I've set a precedent for performances.
"I can't say I'll be happy with a silver or bronze. It has to be gold now. That's why I'm flying back to England this evening, that's why I'll be out on the bike tomorrow morning.
"Winning gold won't be better of worse than what happened today. It will add the hundreds and thousands on the cake. The icing is on it. We've just got to put the little cherry on top.
"It's going to be another tough race, the Olympics, but a very realistic chance of gold."
