OAKLAND -- All lanes of Interstate 580 were closed for about an hour late Friday night, allowing PG&E to repair downed power lines and a pole damaged in a solo vehicle accident that caused a power outage and a three-alarm fire hours earlier.

No one was injured and no structures were damaged in the incident.

About 11 p.m. Friday, the California Highway Patrol and Caltrans closed I-580 lanes in all directions between Golf Links Road and Seminary Avenue, PG&E spokeswoman Jana Morris said. The freeway reopened shortly after midnight once the repairs were completed.

"Power lines needed to be restrung across the freeway and we repaired the pole that was damaged along Mountain Boulevard," Morris said. "Shutting down the freeway at that time was the best way that repair work could have the least impact."

The electrical damage occurred around 1:30 p.m Friday, when a woman veered from the road for unknown reasons and crashed her sedan into a pole, authorities said.

Power lines were knocked to the ground near the intersection of Mountain Boulevard and Edwards Avenue, causing a power outage for about 6,700 residences. Power was restored for all customers by 8 p.m., Morris said.

The accident also sparked a two-acre fire that came within 100 yards of residences, causing dozens of homes to be evacuated. More than 100 area firefighters contained the blaze by 3 p.m. and residents then were allowed back into their homes, authorities

said.
