Pablo Sandoval played third base for the San Jose Giants in Stockton on Monday night, going 0 for 3 with a walk and two strikeouts, and could join Triple-A Fresno on Tuesday. But it's sounding more and more as if he won't join the Giants until next Tuesday, and there's a reason for that.
Manager Bruce Bochy met with Sandoval on Saturday morning and made it clear that Sandoval needs to be in shape to play third base on a daily basis. Giants management isn't happy with Sandoval's condition after he has spent over a month rehabbing a fractured left hamate bone.
"He's been told we have enough first basemen," Bochy said. "With that said, hopefully we're not forced to make a change. It's in Pablo's hands. Before he comes up, it's not just hitting, it's going to be how he plays third base."
It's clear that Sandoval has put on weight since going on the disabled list. Throw in Joaquin Arias' play at third base and Sandoval is no longer the best defensive option there. On a team that leads the majors in errors, that matters -- a lot.
"This guy is going to make us a better club, so we need to get him ready," Bochy said. "But we can't rush him."
Detectives continue to interview witnesses and collect evidence, a Santa Cruz County Sheriff's Office spokesman told the Sentinel on Monday. The investigation is expected to last about two weeks, the paper said.

Narendra Modi hands momento to slain ATS chief's wife at RSS do - indiatoday.intoday.in
In an incident that could raise many eyebrows, slain ATS chief Hemant Karkare's wife Kavita accepted a memento from Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi at a RSS-floated outfit's function here on Monday.
When Hemant Karkare was the ATS chief, he was at the receiving end of the BJP for his investigations in the Malegaon blasts case in which many RSS and saffron brigade leaders were arrested.
In fact, the role of Swami Aseemanand, one of Modi's close supporters, was bared because of Karkare's investigation. The BJP had been so critical of Karkare that when Modi visited his home to pay tributes, Kavita snubbed his offer of compensation.
What was also noteworthy was that Pavitra Chitale, the daughter of slain constable Tukaram Ombale, who caught Ajmal Qasab on 26/11 night, presented a ceremonial sword to Modi.
The evening belonged to Modi, who regaled the crowd with his no-holds-barred attack on the Congress and the Gandhi family. He blamed most of the problems in the North-East on the Congress-led UPA government and said the region was neglected due to lack of infrastructure.
"So many years have passed since independence but these places have no infrastructure. No country can ignore its border areas. If the borders are not guarded properly, it can threaten the whole country," he said.
Modi said freedom fighters from the North-East had not been given due credit in history books. "Many freedom fighters from North-East have given up their lives during the freedom struggle, but they have not been honoured. This has been done only because one family's contribution (read Gandhi family) should not come down," he said.
Modi also did not spare Prime Minister Manmohan Singh. "The PM presented a vision document in 2008 to develop the North-East. It is 2012 and he is still reading the vision document," he said to peals of laughter.
SWAT teams responding to hostage situation in East Oakland - San Jose Mercury News
OAKLAND -- SWAT teams and negotiators are at a home in East Oakland late Monday where at an armed man who shot at an Alameda County Sheriff's deputy is holding a man hostage inside his home, police said.
No one has been injured in the incident, which started just before 8 p.m. at 41st Avenue and International Boulevard, when a sheriff's deputy attempted to stop a stolen car with three men inside.
Two of the men jumped out and ran, police said, while the driver sped off. The deputy followed until the driver ditched the car at High Street near Lester Avenue, then leapt out of the car and fired shots at the deputy.
The suspect, identified only as a 42-year-old man, ran into a home on the 500 block of High Street where a man lives with his wife and child, officials said.
The woman and child were released at 8:13 p.m. and taken to safety by police, but the suspect refuses to release the man.
Oakland police spokeswoman Officer Johnna Watson said the gunman has "some kind of connection" to the hostage, but she did not elaborate on their relationship.
Officials didn't release the suspect's name.
Watson said hostage negotiators are talking to the man on the telephone to try to convince him to surrender.
Several streets in the area are closed, including the High Street exits to Interstate 880, and drivers are being rerouted.
Police have apprehended one of the men who ran from the car, Watson said, but the
third remains at large.Check back for details.
